Why Is the Water Around Mackinac Island So Clear?

Why the Color Changes as You Walk
Anyone who bikes the shore road notices that the water is not one color the whole way around. Right at the edge, where the bottom is a foot or two down, it can look almost white or faintly green. Past that, where the bottom falls away into the channel, the surface turns a dark navy that hides the bottom entirely. The Current That Rinses the Straits
Lakes Michigan and Huron normally share the same water-surface elevation and are often treated scientifically as one lake, Michigan–Huron. The Straits connect them through a complex exchange. NOAA reports an overall eastward flow, but winds can reverse the current roughly every 1.5 days on average. During strong exchanges, flow can reach about 80,000 cubic meters per second. This movement continually mixes and exchanges water around the island, although clarity still depends on weather and local conditions. The Uncomfortable Part: Invasive Mussels
Zebra and quagga mussels entered the Great Lakes through human activity and became widespread. Scientific monitoring shows that light now penetrates deeper in parts of the lake than it did before the mussel invasion, but conditions vary by season and location.
Clearer Water Is Not the Same as a Healthier Lake
Clearer water does not automatically mean a healthier lake. Zebra and quagga mussels remove plankton that supports the aquatic food web and redirect nutrients toward the lake bottom. Their spread has been linked with major changes in native invertebrates and fish communities, including food shortages for some fish.
